Diversity and Encounters: Testimonials from International Students

As you walk across the campus, you’ll encounter people from more than a quarter of all the countries on Earth. Each one could tell you an incredible story about how they set out on their journey—first, in their home country, to meet the difficult requirements just to obtain a visa from the German Embassy, then arriving in Germany, dealing with the authorities again to secure a residence permit, finding an apartment, learning German, making connections, and navigating everyday student life….

The Faculty of Engineering has thus already put its vision of a cosmopolitan campus into practice to a great extent—international students report that they receive excellent academic support from professors and members of staff, - its ongoing goal is now not only to show international students that they are welcome, but also to give them the opportunity to voice all their concerns within the faculty.

Abdul Aziz Al-Saadi from Oman, Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering

I decided to pursue the ELT degree program because there weren’t that many universities where you could study aeronautical engineering. I heard about Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts from a friend—she talked so much about it—so that’s why I completed my registration here.

Rofaida Ibrahim from Egypt, Environmental Technology

What I particularly like about my studies at HSRM is that they aren’t just theoretical—part of them is hands-on. This gives us experience in lab work. The beginning of my time at the university was difficult for me because the differences from my home country, Egypt, are significant, but over time I was able to adapt.

Mohamed Amine Boujday from Tunisia, Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering

What I like most about Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts is that the members of staff, the university administration, the lecturers, and the teaching assistants always support students who are eager to learn and constantly strive to offer students an outstanding campus life by, for example, organizing extracurricular events—including sports, cultural, and artistic activities.

Siham Azzamouri from Morocco, Medical Engineering

The German Medical Engineering sector is well-positioned internationally. For example, Germany ranks second behind the U.S. in medical engineering patents. As a Medical Engineering engineer, I can work in the development of medical engineering systems, equipment, and devices, as well as in customer service at hospitals or medical practices. Above all, my work helps to ensure that medicine continues to improve.

Gerald Adrian Murib from West Papua, New Guinea; Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering

I’m from West Papua New Guinea, which is technically part of Indonesia, but we feel more like an independent country. I was chosen by the elders of my community to go to Germany and learn from the Germans. I decided to pursue a degree program in Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering because I asked myself, “How can I best help my home country?”

Natasha Gunawan from Indonesia, Environmental Technology

In the future, I’d like to do something good for Indonesia. That’s why I chose environmental process engineering with a specialization in wastewater as my specialization
. After reading the module handbook for the Environmental Technology degree program online and comparing it with others, I decided
that HSRM is the best university for me in Hesse. I would definitely recommend it.

Mohamad Daoud Agha from Syria, Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering

What I like about the Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering degree program is that it combines Aerospace Engineering with Electrical Engineering—rather than with Mechanical Engineering, as is the case at other universities. I really enjoy math and tinkering, and I’m interested in Aerospace Engineering. I’ve always wanted to become an engineer.

Cynthia Neal Dongo from Cameroon, Medical Engineering

I enjoyed my studies at the university because I got to learn a little bit about many different degree programs during my first few semesters. My brother studied at Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts and recommended it to me. I would also recommend it to others—in fact, I already have.

Lancelo Kanouo from Cameroon, Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering

I really enjoy my studies at Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts because the classes are hands-on and the lecturers are always there for us and make time for the students. That’s why I’d gladly recommend these studies to a friend.

Fatima Abousamra from the U.S. and Syria, Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences

What I particularly like about the Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences degree program is that it’s so broad in scope. That’s helpful if you’re not yet sure where your strengths and weaknesses lie. It offers a wide range of courses from various fields of engineering, and you get to try out and learn a lot along the way.

Nelson Okeyo Oroo from Kenya, Medical Engineering

What I particularly like about studying at HSRM is that the relationships between professors and students are very good. Since I’ve studied at other universities before, I can say that the professors at HSRM are always approachable and willing to help. Another thing I like is the cultural diversity. I’ve met people from countries I’d only heard of before.

Sofia Ananieva from Ukraine, International Technical Cooperation (ITZ)

My advice for new international students looking to get familiar with their new surroundings, the university, and their studies is to get to know as many people as possible. This will help not only with your studies but also in your future life. Ask as many questions as you can, no matter how silly they may sound. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Sara Thapa from Nepal, Environmental Technology

One thing I like about Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts is that you have direct contact with the instructors. If you have questions, you can always go to them, and they’ll help you solve any problems. Because the student groups are small, it’s easier to get to know others or communicate better with the professors, and at HSRM you never feel like you’re lost in the crowd. RheinMain University of Applied Sciences has a lot to offer; in addition to your studies, you can choose from a wide range of activities—from University Sports to the programs offered by the Competence & Career Center—to further your personal development. There are also regular get-togethers where you can get to know the other students.

Miriam Abousamra from the U.S. and Syria, Environmental Technology

As an international student, what I particularly liked about our college was that the number of students isn’t as large as at universities. This allowed me to build personal relationships with my professors and fellow students. It was difficult for me at first because I couldn’t understand everything, and it was very different from my German class, where people spoke more slowly and clearly. On the other hand, I was lucky that I was able to get to know my fellow students better right away during orientation week.
