What is it about?

Starting Wintersemester 2026/2027

From computer-controlled hand prostheses to MRI scanners: The Biomedical Engineering specialization within the Applied Engineering Sciences degree program teaches you how modern biomedical engineering works, equipping you with the skills to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic options.

The degree program initially focuses on providing students with a comprehensive engineering education. This is then supplemented by the medical disciplines of human medicine, anatomy, physiology, and diagnostics. On the technical side, you’ll familiarize yourself with all of the most important diagnostic and therapeutic instruments and equipment. You’ll learn about biomedical engineering procedures and methods through independent experiments conducted in various laboratories dedicated to the specialization.

What can I do with it?

Biomedical engineers work in the development, servicing, and sales of medical technology products. They organize and maintain medical equipment in healthcare facilities, train users in the operation of medical engineering products, and monitor the safe and effective use of medical devices.
This degree will prepare you for a successful career entry, or for subsequent master’s degree program study.

Medical Engineering is also available as a cooperative practice-integrated progr

Theory alone isn't your thing? In the practice-integrated track, you'll work at a partner company. You'll gain hands-on experience and earn your own money.

Time4ing Program Option — Study at Your Own Pace

With the flexible Time4ing option, you can spread the courses from the first three semesters over five semesters. This means you’ll have fewer subjects and examinations per semester during this phase. This gives you more time to focus on important foundational courses such as math, physics, and Computer Science. You’ll also benefit from an extended BAfög funding period.
