For the 15th time, the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering hosted the Science Day. On the program: insights into research at Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) and reports on ongoing projects from the faculty.
Open Access: more formats eligible for funding
Dr. Friederike Schmiga, contact person for Open Access publications at all HSRM locations, kicked off the event by presenting the publication fund. In addition to journal articles, monographs, edited volumes and monographic dissertations are now also eligible for funding.
Building history in Pergamon and Lyrbe
Prof. Dr. Corinna Rohn (Building History, Building Recording, Building Conservation, Conversion) reported on her research leave for a semester in 2025 and the summer schools she organized in Pergamon and Lyrbe. The HSRM has been active in Turkey since 2022 and organizes two-week summer schools with German and Turkish students.
In the "House of Attalos" in Pergamon, a residential building with around 500 years of construction history from the Hellenistic to the Roman period, historical plans and photos (from 1905) as well as findings from excavations from 1903/04 were used. In 2025, modern surveying and mapping methods were used to analyze construction phases, building techniques, conversions and repairs. This resulted in several studies.
In the ancient ruins of Lyrbe, near the city of Side (Turkey), students also examined selected areas of the ancient city plan and created precise building surveys.
Guest lecture from Namibia
Vasana Kaviua, guest researcher from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), presented a research project on the integration of renewable energies in urban and regional planning. It is based on the UN goals SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The focus is on solutions for rural regions that are heavily dependent on fossil fuels and are affected by climate extremes. The goal is planning that reduces emissions, increases security of supply and strengthens local communities in the long term.
Five years of the endowed professorship for cycling
Prof. Dr. Martina Lohmeier took stock of five years of the endowed professorship for cycling, which expired at the end of 2025. The HSRM was one of seven locations in Germany. Teaching started digitally in 2021 due to the pandemic; the first meeting of the cycling professorships also took place at the HSRM. In the winter semester 2022/23, the Sustainable Mobility master's degree program was launched with high demand. During her professorship, Prof. Lohmeier was able to initiate and complete many research projects: Aktiv & Selbstständig Unterwegs - Mobilitätsbedürfnisse jugendlicher Mädchen, aZuR - automatisierte Zustandserfassung der Radwegeinfrastruktur, Subjektive Sicherheit im urbanen Raum: Mobilitätsentscheidungen junger Menschen and S-PE(N)DELEC.
Service for researchers
Finally, Nicole Gürtler, responsible for finance and research in the faculty, presented the support services for researchers at the HSRM.
