Sustainable Heritage Conservation
What is it?
The sustainable development of architectural heritage has become a central task of construction as well as of urban and regional development. Historical buildings and sites as well as cultural landscapes contribute significantly to the distinctiveness and identity of cities and regions. Recognizing the value and potential of historical buildings and sites requires interdisciplinary knowledge and practical experience.
This is where the practice-oriented degree program comes in. In the course of various study projects, students learn to recognize the value of historical monuments and to develop sustainable strategies for conservation, restoration, and conversion. The teaching concept covers a very wide range of fields based on three pillars:
- Redevelopment and feasibility
- Restoration and adding to existing buildings
- Safeguarding urban and cultural landscapes
What can I do with it?
The objective of the master's degree program is to provide students with the interdisciplinary skills required to develop ecologically, economically, socially, and culturally responsible and sustainable solutions, especially in the architecturally challenging historical context of the built environment.
The master's degree program Architectural Heritage Conservation | Building Revitalization and Transformation M. Sc. qualifies graduates for challenging tasks in planning, conservation, adding to existing buildings and management of international architectural heritage.
Graduates work in planning offices in interdisciplinary teams as well as in heritage conservation authorities or take on planning tasks in municipal offices and other public institutions or NGOs with a focus on the conservation and management of culturally and historically valuable artefacts and building projects in existing structures. They are also qualified to work in the areas of cultural and site management of sites of historical and social relevance, such as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Further occupational fields include consulting services for craftsmen and conservators as well as public relations work, preparing information and communicating values and conservation concepts in the area of architectural heritage.
For degree-seeking students: detailed information on admission requirements, application deadlines, etc. can be found on the German page.
If you start in winter term 2025/26, you will be able to choose between two specialisations:
UNESCO World Heritage & Urban Conservation
In this specialization, you will learn how to develop and apply integrated methods and tools for the conservation of cities, cultural landscapes and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will use practical examples, such as planning and architectural concepts, to put this knowledge into practice.

Research and teaching
The laboratory for building research is an integral part of teaching. In compulsory subjects, students learn how to deal with existing buildings and the importance of preliminary investigations in construction projects. Elective subjects deepen the use of optical and electronic media for the precise measurement of historical buildings.
UNESCO Chair
Since 2022, the UNESCO Chair at Hochschule RheinMain has been part of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The chair holder is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kloos. The chair researches and supports the preservation and sustainable development of historic urban and cultural landscapes.
