Sustainable Heritage Conservation
What is it?
Architectural and cultural heritage shapes the identity of our cities and regions. Our master’s degree program in Architectural Heritage Conservation | Sustainable Heritage Development will enable you to develop this heritage in a sustainable way. During your studies, you will learn to appreciate the significance of historic buildings and develop sustainable strategies for their preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse. We frequently work on-site at properties and actively involve you in our diverse research projects, both nationally and internationally.
The new master’s degree in Architectural Heritage Conservation | Sustainable Heritage Development offers you a choice between two specializations: Building Preservation and Restoration and UNESCO World Heritage and Urban Conservation, accompanied by our UNESCO Chair.
What can I do with it?
The master’s degree program in Architectural Heritage Conservation | Sustainable Heritage Development prepares you for advanced roles in the planning, preservation, further development, and management of architectural heritage at both national and international levels. Graduates are well-equipped to work in interdisciplinary planning offices, heritage conservation authorities or NGOs.
For degree-seeking students: detailed information on admission requirements, application deadlines, etc. can be found on the German page.
If you start in winter term 2025/26, you will be able to choose between two specialisations:
UNESCO World Heritage & Urban Conservation
In this specialization, you will learn how to develop and apply integrated methods and tools for the conservation of cities, cultural landscapes and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will use practical examples, such as planning and architectural concepts, to put this knowledge into practice.

Research and teaching
The laboratory for building research is an integral part of teaching. In compulsory subjects, students learn how to deal with existing buildings and the importance of preliminary investigations in construction projects. Elective subjects deepen the use of optical and electronic media for the precise measurement of historical buildings.
UNESCO Chair
Since 2022, the UNESCO Chair at Hochschule RheinMain has been part of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The chair holder is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kloos. The chair researches and supports the preservation and sustainable development of historic urban and cultural landscapes.
