Project description
Scientific studies and nationwide surveys show that there are differences between the sexes in terms of transport demand and mobility requirements, e.g. with regard to the purpose and length of journeys, ownership of means of transport and their use. Independent, active forms of mobility, such as walking and cycling, are used by boys in Hesse for 50% of their journeys, whereas girls only use them for 36%. While a similar number of girls and boys walk, this difference is due to the different use of bicycles.
In addition, the needs of gender groups, including adolescent girls, for example, are severely underrepresented in transport planning processes. The research project builds on a preliminary study that took a closer look at the bicycle use of adolescent girls at a district center in Wiesbaden.
The project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the mobility practices of young people, especially from a gender-critical perspective, in different spatial typologies, e.g. a high-density conurbation and a peripheral rural region. Together with the young people, their mobility needs will be identified and the action required to promote independent, active mobility will be derived from this.
The process is divided into four work packages. First, basic research will be carried out to examine the influence of gender and the respective spatial type on the transport behavior of young people. Based on this analysis, a project day on independent, active mobility will be designed, which will be carried out at four schools in different spatial types, such as a metropolitan urban region and a peripheral rural region. The project day includes the completion of a questionnaire, focus group discussions, a joint inspection of the school environment with subsequent reflection and a workshop on fields of action and possible interventions to promote independent, active mobility.
Finally, a feedback meeting will be held with the participating schools in order to identify potentials and deficits of the project and to be able to adapt them for further projects.
