Despite established systems for recording and assessing the condition of roads, there is still little information available on the quality and condition of existing cycle paths in the non-urban network. A standardized recording and assessment of the condition has not yet been established here, even though these routes can be particularly attractive for commuters on the periphery between rural areas and urban areas as well as for leisure and tourist cycling.

A valid and comprehensive data basis is required for the targeted upgrading and maintenance of the existing cycle network. To date, there has been no standardized data collection and evaluation system tailored to the needs of cycling. With the automated recording and evaluation procedure to be developed for out-of-town cycle paths (aZuR), all paths intended for cycling can be examined in a comparable manner in order to derive priorities for structural maintenance and the targeted use of financial resources to improve and optimize the cycling infrastructure. The aZuR data can be used as a basis for cycle type-specific routing.

As part of the "aZuR" project, the requirements for a condition survey and assessment tailored to the needs of cycling are being compiled in order to derive the condition criteria to be collected. On selected out-of-town cycle paths, the condition, design and surroundings are recorded using a measuring vehicle with LiDAR (three-dimensional laser scanning) and cameras. Based on this data, an automated evaluation process and a new evaluation scheme for different types of bicycles will then be developed.
