UNESCO Chair on Historic Urban Landscapes and Heritage Impact Assessments
The UNESCO Chair for Historic Urban Landscapes and Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment was established by UNESCO resolution in April 2022 at Hochschule RheinMain in the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It is the only UNESCO Chair in Hesse and the only UNESCO Chair at a university of applied sciences in Germany. The chair holder is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kloos.

The UNESCO Chair supports the conservation and sustainable development of historic urban landscapes inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, focusing in particular on properties under high pressure of change. In such cities or urbanized cultural landscapes, many, often controversial, practical issues arise in relation to their historic fabric, administration and management. In order to develop goal- and solution-oriented proposals, the UNESCO Chair brings together expertise on planning, management and project evaluation in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It develops strategies for conflict prevention and mediation with a focus on application-oriented research, teaching and knowledge transfer.
Research and teaching
The UNESCO Chair researches the complexity of urban world heritage sites on the basis of the UNESCO recommendation of 2011. This includes research projects, publications as well as thesis and doctoral projects.
The courses offered at Hochschule RheinMain include the history of architecture and urban planning as well as the preservation of architectural heritage. The program is supplemented by lectures and continuing education courses.
