Civil Engineering
What is it?
Few degree programs are as diverse as Civil Engineering. Across the construction industry, where engineering-related issues are pivotal, this degree program provides answers. The program covers planning, structural analysis, and execution of construction projects in building construction and civil engineering. But it is also relevant to infrastructure projects such as transport routes and hydraulic engineering. Topics such as digital planning and construction and sustainability are now integral components of the degree program. It prepares students for the tasks of design, construction operations and planning of technical infrastructure and environmental technology.
In semesters 1, 2 and 3, students acquire knowledge of the mathematical-technical principles and the fundamental subjects of civil engineering. In stage 2 (semesters 4–6), they choose one of the following three options for specialization:
- Structural engineering – structural design
- Structural engineering – construction operations
- Traffic and water
Required elective modules complement the chosen specialization and facilitate a customized thematic approach. Numerous practical assignments are integrated into the degree program. These are run in our many well-equipped laboratories, allowing the degree program material to be taught in a more efficient and attractive way.
Semesters 5 to 7 are classified as a mobility window. The mobility window provides students with the option – but not an obligation – to study abroad. Internships abroad and summer schools are also supported.
A professional internship undertaken in semester 5 supplements the degree program. A bachelor’s thesis completes the degree program. For information on the introductory internship, contact Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mascha Baitinger.
What can I do with it?
There are arguably few other degree programs that provide their graduates with similarly diverse career options and potential future work fields. As a civil engineer you will find interesting jobs at construction companies, in the construction industry, in service companies, in public administration or in engineering offices dealing with consulting and planning.
Students also have the option to deepen their knowledge with several master’s degree programs.
For degree-seeking students: detailed information on admission requirements, application deadlines, etc. can be found on the German page.
Course of study
The Civil Engineering degree program has a modular structure:
- Segment of studies 1 (semesters 1 - 3): Mathematical and scientific basics, basic knowledge and fundamentals of civil engineering are taught.
- Segment of studies 2 (semesters 4 - 7): Choice between the specializations Civil Engineering-Building Operations, Civil Engineering-Building Construction and Traffic & Water.
- Within your chosen specialization, you will complete an internship (BPT) in an engineering office, at a construction company or another potential employer.
The curricula of the specializations give you an overview of the content and specializations taught in each semester:
Details on the course content can be found in the module handbook (PO 2024).

Studies and examinations completed at another university or in another degree program at Hochschule RheinMain can be recognized for equivalent achievements in the Civil Engineering (B. Eng.) degree program. Recognition can also be given for achievements from training or academic appointments outside of the university. However, knowledge and skills from initial school education and technical secondary school training cannot be credited towards a university degree program.
For further information, please refer to the recognition statutes of Hochschule RheinMain .
Recognition of these so-called non-degree course achievements must be applied for. The application for recognition of achievements unrelated to the degree program (PDF 277 KB) must be submitted to the Recognition Committee of the Civil Engineering (B. Eng.) degree program by the deadline. The recognition procedure usually takes six weeks. You can submit an application if you are enrolled in the Bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering at Hochschule RheinMain. No examination for recognition will take place without an application.
We recommend that all students in higher semesters submit their application for recognition as soon as possible after the first day of classes. Otherwise, it may not be possible to meet the deadline for admission of coursework.
Procedure of the recognition process
Step 1:
Achievements from a previous university or institution (source achievements) can be recognized if they do not differ significantly in quality, level, learning outcome, profile or workload from the target achievements applied for (modules of the Bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering at Hochschule RheinMain).
Therefore, please examine the module description of your previous university or institution to determine which of your passed source achievements could be equivalent to target achievements of the Civil Engineering degree program. It is also possible to combine two or more modules.
For some universities, equivalence lists (see below) are available for which recognition is possible without further examination.
If an assignment is not possible in individual cases, please make this clear in your application documents.
Step 2:
Complete the application for recognition of non-degree coursework (PDF 277 KB) , stating the source coursework with module number SWS, CP and grade as well as the target coursework with module number and CP. Sign the application.
Provide the proof required in the cover letter for the application (PDF 224 KB) in the original or as a certified copy. Carefully examine your documents for completeness before submitting them and note that your application will only be processed if the complete documents are available in the original or as a certified copy by the deadline.
You can submit your collected recognition documents in a labeled and addressed DIN A4 envelope to the Civil Engineering degree program office (room D 124) or to the Civil Engineering degree program mailbox (opposite room D 124). Please note that the submitted documents will not be returned.
Step 3:
The recognition officer evaluates the acquired competencies based on criteria. This means that academic achievements can be recognized as long as they do not show any significant difference in quality, level, learning outcomes, profile or workload. Credits earned outside the university can be recognized if they are equivalent to those offered at the university. Achievements that you have completed during your initial school education cannot be recognized. You can find more detailed information in the recognition regulations of Hochschule RheinMain.
Step 4:
The Recognition Officer will decide whether your application for recognition of achievements is approved or rejected. The result will be documented in your student or examination file. You can view recognized target achievements (positive notification) in the examination portal. You will receive a separate notification of rejections.
Step 5:
Recognition of achievements in segment of studies 2 can only be entered once you have registered for a specialization / specialization. You may have to apply for this at a later date (after choosing your specialization or focus) with the cover letter for the registration of recognized achievements in the segment of studies 2 (PDF 116 KB) at the Civil Engineering degree program office.
Please use the following forms for your application:
Application for recognition of non-degree program achievements (PDF 277 KB)
Cover letter for the application (PDF 224 KB)
Please note the following information on the recognition procedure:
- Applications for recognition must be submitted within the given deadline (usually the first five weeks of lectures).
- Recognition of the source achievement is only possible as long as the studies or examinations to be replaced at Hochschule RheinMain (target achievement) have not yet been taken. [Section 1, paragraph 9, sentence 1 of the Recognition Statutes]
- Recognized achievements in the segment of studies 2 can only be registered if you have registered for a specialization / specialization.
- The Recognition Committee maintains equivalence lists for the designation of equivalent achievements.
- A source performance that is/was not graded is recognized as a target performance with a grade of 4.0.

Are you planning to spend one or more semesters abroad and have questions about the recognition of credits you want to earn there? Then please contact our International Office at the faculty at an early stage. You must conclude a Learning Agreement before your stay abroad. The credits entered in this agreement will be recognized after you have successfully passed your examinations and after your return from abroad.
