Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas
What is it?
With its interdisciplinary approach, the master's degree program Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas prepares students for tasks in urban, landscape and infrastructure planning as well as in environmental management and deals with the challenges and future tasks of spatial, social, technological and climatic change. The students acquire the necessary knowledge and familiarize themselves with the required methods in order to combine scientific theories and methods with practicable implementation in the sustainable development of cities and metropolitan areas.
Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas is a joint degree program offered by Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and Hochschule Geisenheim University. The degree program thus combines the expertise of all three universities in the fields of urban planning, resources and infrastructure, landscape architecture and urban ecology.
What can I do with it?
Graduates of the master's degree program Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas are highly skilled in the relevant tasks of environmental management, infrastructure planning and urban and landscape planning. Key topics are, for example, neighborhood and urban development, regional planning, nature conservation, open space protection and planning of green areas, water management, resource management, mobility and traffic management. At the same time, graduates of this degree program are generalists with a background in economics and ecology who have the necessary leadership skills to work independently as project leaders in planning and management.
A wide range of professional fields of activity are open to graduates in the municipal, public and private sector, in local, regional, national and international authorities and institutions, planning and engineering offices, development companies, transport associations, water supply and wastewater disposal companies, energy supply and waste management companies, in research institutions and universities.
With evidence of a specialization in landscape architecture or urban planning and a corresponding relevant first university degree (pursuant to the respective German legislation on chambers), an application for registration as a "landscape architect" or "urban planner" can be submitted to the chambers of architects and urban planners, provided that the additionally required periods of professional practice are fulfilled.
Course of study
The standard period of study for the UMSB degree program is four semesters and the program comprises 120 ECTS. The studies are divided into three semesters with courses from a compulsory and a compulsory elective area and the final fourth semester for the preparation of the master's thesis. The courses take place at the study locations Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden Campuses and Geisenheim .
Part-time variant
UMSB is also offered in a part-time version, which makes it easier for you to combine your career with the master's degree program by extending the standard period of study to seven semesters. In terms of content, the two degree programs are identical, i.e. you also take part in the regular courses of the full-time version in the part-time version.
Due to the wide range of options and combinations of modules, you usually only have two days of attendance per week. For successful admission, you must meet the content and formal requirements of the full-time degree program . In addition, you must provide proof of an existing employment relationship in an engineering-oriented academic appointment. You can find the exact criteria under Admission.
The scope and content of the compulsory and elective areas depend on the chosen concentration. There are a wide range of options here, allowing students to design their studies individually.
Depending on the specialization, four to six "Management" modules must be taken in the compulsory modules catalog. They teach environmental legal principles and interdisciplinary key skills in management. The integrated "interdisciplinary project" serves to enable interdisciplinary work and holistic thinking.
The following specializations can be chosen for in-depth content, in which elective and elective modules must be taken:
- Landscape Architecture (L) with the modules Urban Ecology, Application of Instruments Relevant to Environmental and Nature Conservation, Ecological Basics of Open Space Planning, Cultural Landscape Development, Biodiversity and Nature Conservation as well as the project Planning Landscape Architecture.
- Urban Planning (S) with the modules Urban Planning History and Theory, Housing and Settlement Planning, Urban Development and Neighborhood Planning, Urban Renewal and Redevelopment, Social and Cultural Aspects of Urban Development and the Urban Design project.
- Transport (V) with the modules Transport in Urban Areas, Management of Transport and Mobility, Transport Development Planning.
- Resources (R) with the modules Resource Management, Energy Supply, Circular Economy.
- Water Management & Infrastructure (W) with the modules Water Management: Water Management, Sustainable Urban Water Management, Water Management Models, Water Development for the Implementation of the Water Framework Directive,
(I) with the modules Infrastructure: Water Supply and Disposal, Hazard Prevention in Urban Areas, Immission Control/Environmental Risks.
