Welcome to English for Staff
*part of the ELLIPSE project
English for Staff supports teaching staff, academic staff and administrative staff who work with international students in further developing their English and using it confidently in their everyday work at the university, so that international students can enjoy a successful and well-supported study experience. The offer is aimed at teaching staff in fully or partly English-taught degree programmes (in particular in STEM subjects), as well as colleagues in student-facing service units such as the Student Office, Examinations Office, programme offices, the library and similar areas who work regularly with international students.
English for academic staff
We offer individualized language support services to teaching staff
- to help you prepare for and practise teaching in English in fully or partly English-taught degree programmes.
- to work with you to find effective approaches and techniques for teaching students who use English as an additional language.
- to support you in adapting your course content and teaching materials so that international students can have a successful and well-supported study experience at our university.
What we offer
Our coaching sessions are tailor-made to your needs. We offer individualised support in a one-to-one format on a wide range of topics: preparing and teaching your courses in English, language skills for interacting with students, fluency in English, writing style, etc. Book an appointment and we can decide together how often we will meet and for how many sessions. A session typically lasts for 45 minutes and, depending on availability, a maximum of 6 sessions can be booked.
We are currently offering workshops for academic staff who teach, or will teach, in fully or partly English-taught degree programmes, particularly in STEM subjects. These workshops are open to teaching staff and academic colleagues who work with international students and use English as an additional language in their studies. If you would like an exclusive workshop-on-demand for you and your colleagues, please contact us to discuss this option.
We know that it's not easy to be observed when you teach a class, especially if you have to teach in a second or third language! However, we are not here to criticize or judge. Our main objective is to be your eyes and ears in the classroom and to make constructive suggestions so that teaching in English can be even more effective. Please contact us to arrange a meeting so we can discuss your specific situation and needs. After the observation, a follow-up meeting should be organised as soon as possible. Depending on the outcome of the meeting, it is also possible to request a second observation, to book some coaching sessions or to sign up for a workshop.
English for administrative staff
We can help you to feel more comfortable when using English at work and to use English to welcome and inform our international students, staff and visitors
- to enhance communication skills for dealing with international students, researchers, and guests.
- to support effective collaboration in English within international teams and projects.
- to help adapt administrative documents and processes for students, colleagues and external partners who use English as an additional language.
What we offer
Coffee talks: Would you, as a member of the administrative staff, like to practise your English in an informal, low-pressure setting? We offer individual or small-group conversations where you can talk about everyday work situations, ask questions and try out new phrases in a relaxed atmosphere – on campus or online. You do not need to prepare anything in advance; just contact us and we will find a format that works for.
Do you need more intensive support on a particular topic like explaining university processes that may be unfamiliar to international students or staff? Do you sometimes work with German forms, documents or emails and find yourself looking for the right wording in English? We can arrange longer one-to-one coaching sessions, a short series of appointments or departmental courses where you and your colleagues work on your specific needs in more depth. You can also write to us with workshop requests – we are happy to provide an English workshop tailored to your team.
