Engish for academic staff
As part of the projects QUIS-DiVine and Global Design & Media CoSpace, we offer individualized language support services to teaching staff and researchers.
Why do we offer English for academic staff?
- To help you prepare and practice for teaching in English.
- To work with you to find effective approaches and techniques for teaching non-native English-speaking students.
To support you with adapting your course content and teaching materials to acommodate non-native English-speaking students.
What we offer
Our coaching sessions are tailor-made to your needs. We offer individualised support in a one-to-one format on a wide range of topics: preparing and teaching your courses in English, language skills for interacting with students, fluency in English, writing style, etc. Book an appointment and we can decide together how often we will meet and for how many sessions. A session typically lasts for 45 minutes and, depending on availability, a maximum of 8 sessions can be booked.
We are currently offering 3-hour workshops open to all academic staff at HSRM. If you would like to have an exclusive 'workshop-on-demand' for members of your faculty, please contact us to discuss this option.
- nteractive proofreading
If you have English teaching notes or slides for your courses, you can make an appointment for us to look at them with you. We’ll look at your materials together and discuss changes and/or make suggestions. Although we may not be able to look at all of your materials in the time we have, we can still make suggestions for effective changes. Interactive proofreading appointments are 30 or 60 minutes long. If you would like more in-depth, interactive support, please contact us for coaching. Contact us, tell us what your needs are and arrange an appointment. After the interactive proofreading appointment, you have the chance to make the necessary changes to the rest of your text. If you would like us to check a different section of the same text or any other texts, feel free to make another appointment.
We know that it's not easy to be observed when you teach a class, especially if you have to teach in a second or third language! However, we are not here to criticize or judge. Our main objective is to be your eyes and ears in the classroom and to make constructive suggestions so that teaching in English can be even more effective. Please contact us to arrange a meeting so we can discuss your specific situation and needs. After the observation, a follow-up meeting should be organised as soon as possible. Depending on the outcome of the meeting, it is also possible to request a second observation, to book some coaching sessions or to sign up for a workshop.
English for administrative staff
We can help you to feel more comfortable when using English at work and to use English to welcome and inform our international students, staff and visitors:
Why do we offer English for administrative staff?
- To enhance communication skills for dealing with international students, researchers, and guests.
- To support effective collaboration in English within international teams and projects.
To help adapt administrative documents and processes for non-native English-speaking stakeholders.
What we offer
Coffee talks
Would you like to feel more comfortable when speaking English? Can you find 30 minutes per week to go online for a little bit of English speaking practice? Then please get in touch to make an appointment for a Coffee Talk session. Coffee Talks can become a regular event for you if you wish (e.g. weekly or monthly), and therefore really help you to improve your English. If you would like to arrange an appointment, please get in touch by sending an email.
Sup & talk
Speak English whilst enjoying the challenge and relaxation of stand up paddleboarding (SUP). Please register via University Sports for upcoming events that are open to all HSRM students and staff. If you would like to arrange a SUP & Talk event for your team or a small group, please get in touch with us.
Walk & talk
Speaking English - and especially “practising” - can feel stressful and artificial. To make things more relaxed we’ve started offering Walk & Talk sessions of 30 - 45 minutes. It has the great advantage of taking us out of our offices on a sunny day. You can request a Walk & Talk just for yourself, or for a small group of colleagues.
Do you need to explain university processes to international students and staff? Does this involve the translation of German documents and forms and leave you searching for the right vocabulary? We can help by meeting together with you online in a video conference, either one-to-one or in small groups. We can share the documents on-screen, find the missing vocabulary and work out how to explain university processes which might be surprising for international visitors.
Please get in touch by sending an email.
Do you need a period of more intensive help on a particular topic? If the 30-minute Coffee Talk format is not enough, we can arrange either longer sessions, or an intensive block of sessions. You can also write to us with workshop requests. We are happy to provide an English workshop for your team.
Quick tips
We provide a series of 30-minute online information sessions on topics that will help you to improve your English. We address common problems and recommend a selection of resources on each topic. This event is held on the 13th of each month at 1 p.m.
Quick fit
Quick Fit is the English version of Pausenexpress which is a 15-minute fitness routine that takes place directly at your workplace. It is designed to relax and mobilize you, with particular focus on the shoulders, neck and back. Quick Fit is a joint cooperation between the Language Center and University Sports. You can sign up on the plattform of the University Sports.
