15 schoolgirls discover the world of DNA
Written by Aylin Kaymak.
As part of the "More Girls in STEM (MiM)" project of Hochschule RheinMain, a varied workshop on genetics took place at Ernst-Reuter-Schule in Dietzenbach. 15 schoolgirls from grades 8 to 10 took part and learned about the basics of molecular biology in a practical and creative way. After a compact introduction to the structure and function of DNA, the participants modeled the famous double helix using plasticine and sweets. This allowed them to playfully understand how base pairs, the sugar-phosphate framework and the spatial structure of genetic information are connected. A highlight was the subsequent DNA extraction from strawberries and kiwis. The pupils carried out each step themselves and were actually able to see and touch the isolated DNA at the end. The workshop impressively demonstrated how exciting biology can be and strengthened the girls' interest in scientific topics, in keeping with the spirit of the MiM project.

Quantum computing in the evening
Three 10th grade students took part in a three-day evening course at Hochschule RheinMain and immersed themselves in the physics of quanta. Using Qiskit, the open source framework from IBM, they wrote and simulated their first simple quantum algorithms.
The workshop "Quantum, Quantum Computing and Qiskit - Practical Training for 10th Grade Girls" took place on October 27, 28 and 30, 2025 at the Faculty of Engineering. It was offered as part of the More Girls in STEM (MiM) project of the faculty's decentralized Equal Opportunity Representative.
Pia, Lotte and Julie were enthusiastic and full of ambition. The quantum diploma for successful participation at the end was more than deserved.
