The era of ball games in Wiesbaden began in 1876 with the opening of a field in the spa gardens. The exhibition shows how soccer, handball, and hockey evolved from the ridiculed whims of a few teenagers into major events drawing huge crowds. It pays tribute to figures such as the energetic Scottish sports enthusiast Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles from Sonnenberger Straße, the courageous Jewish handball player Sally Großhut, and the young rebels from Limes-Verlag in the Pariser Hof, who, in a rare combination of talents, not only produced excellent books but also ranked among Germany’s best hockey players.
On display are rulebooks, photo albums, early club magazines, and even a very special sticker collection album.
The exhibition can be viewed in the rooms of the University and State Library at Rheinstraße 55/57 during opening hours.
