Laboratory for building research and surveying

Tasks and equipment

The task of the  Laboratory for Building Research is to measure and research the existing original substance of our built environment. It aims to determine their value in order to create reliable basics for the preservation and further development of historic buildings.

The spectrum of work deals with

  • Questions about historical building techniques and materials as well as building processes,
  • the design and classification of individual monuments in their urban and landscape context,
  • the further development and critical application of analog and digital measurement methods and their evaluation.

The laboratory works at the interface between teaching, research and practical experience. It is located in particular in the bachelor's and master's degree programs in Architecture, Architectural Heritage and Civil Engineering.

Teaching and research in the laboratory

The laboratory combines teaching and research: new research questions arise from the results obtained, which we explore in depth in projects together with interested students. This offers them the opportunity to develop their scientific skills, while teaching is constantly being expanded by the latest research findings.

The laboratory's work is divided into three subject areas:

  • Surveying
  • building research
  • Building exploration

Specializations include the documentation of historical buildings, archaeological building research in the Mediterranean region, the analysis of modern concrete buildings and the energy-efficient refurbishment of half-timbered houses.

The documentation of all projects since 20xx is stored digitally in a database and can be published for the purposes of scientific work or new planning.

Partners

Partners in the practical experience include monument authorities such as the State Monument Office in Hesse, the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE), the lower monument authorities, castles and gardens in Hesse, Hessenpark, the Institute for Stone Conservation and private owners.

Partners of the research projects are universities, associations and societies as well as various foundations and the German Research Foundation, which contribute to the funding of these projects.
