Project description

In the years 2023 - 2024, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the Hochschule RheinMain and the Université de Lausanne will be working on the question of the extent to which tourist traffic in Switzerland can be distinguished from other (everyday) traffic. The goal of the project is to document tourism traffic in Switzerland methodically, to map it as comprehensively as possible and to develop an automated calculation methodology for monitoring based on key values in order to be able to show changes in tourism traffic over time.

The project is basically divided into four work packages, with Hochschule RheinMain being involved in the implementation of work packages 1 and 2. In work package 1 "Definition Tourismusverkehr" ("Definition of tourism traffic"), research was carried out on the state of research in the field of tourism traffic, followed by a critical examination of the sources and a definition of tourism traffic as well as a preparation of the data basis.

In work package 2, on the basis of the definitions and the existing data, a separate qualification approach was developed using secondary analyses of travel and transport statistics, building on WP 1.3 "Vorhandene Datengrundlagen" ("Existing data bases") in the form of a procedural concept.

In the further course of the project, the Swiss research institutes involved will identify the data gaps with regard to the proposed quantification approaches, calculate and present tourism traffic and make recommendations for updating the necessary mobility data every five years.
