BIP Summer School 2026 – Social- and Climate-Responsive Architecture: Building with Bamboo
EU Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme
In the second week of September 2026, the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering will host its third international Summer School at the KSR Campus. This year, the event will be held for the first time as a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), in cooperation with the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and the University of Porto (UP).
Nearly 50 students from various countries will come together on campus to engage intensively with the topics of climate-responsive construction, sustainable architecture, and social responsibility in design and building. The focus will be on the practical implementation of a housing prototype for earthquake-prone areas of Ecuador, based on a concept developed by UPM.
Together, the students will construct an experimental mock-up using sustainable materials such as bamboo and earth. At a 1:1 scale, they will directly test, analyse, and further develop construction principles, material properties, and connection techniques. Through hands-on work on the building project, participants will have the opportunity to experience sustainable construction methods firsthand and to further develop their own skills in design and construction.
A key component of the Summer School is international and intercultural exchange. Students from different countries, universities, and disciplines will contribute their perspectives, experiences, and ideas, working together to develop new approaches to future-oriented architecture. In addition to the academic exchange, the programme will foster new connections, provide insights into different ways of working, and promote a shared understanding of how architecture can respond to social and climate-related challenges.
