TACTICAL TOME - Immersive Combat Encounters
Pen and Paper systems offer diverse adventures, often involving engaging combat scenarios. Dungeon Masters plan these sessions and invest significant time preparing to ensure enjoyable and tactical challenges. Adventures often revolve around combat, which becomes engaging through setting, story, or strategy. However, Dungeon Masters often find themselves struggling designing the next combat encounter of their story due to uncertainty about what adversary may be a good or at least interesting fit for their specific situation. This issue is usually related to a lack of understanding what implicit information a monster description, most commonly the “Stat-Block”, provides.
It is, however, possible to systematically extract and interpret these implied information. This work concerns itself with utilising first-order logic to extract implied information about character behavior and tactics to assist Dungeon Masters in creating more immersive and enjoyable combat encounters.
The approach of achieving this goal is to select potential adversaries based on a given player party and the terrain the encounter will take place in by applying previously defined rules. These rules will be a composition of first order logic formulas and evaluated on demand.
