sam meets Caro - final exhibition of Architecture

Prof. Daniel Seiberts, Prof. Dr. Matthias Kowald, Prof. Dieter Müller, and Vice President of the University Prof. Dr. Andreas Brensing welcomed the guests.

Construction with existing buildings in the focus of bachelor's and master's theses

Under the motto "sam meets Caro", students from Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSRM) presented their bachelor's and master's degree theses at HSRM's Stadtlabor in the Luisenforum Wiesbaden. The exhibition focused on approaches to building with and in existing buildings - a specialization that is particularly characteristic of the master's degree program in Architecture.

Welcome and impulses from the university and urban society

Prof. Dr. Andreas Brensing,Vice President for Research, Entrepreneurship and Science Communication at HSRM, welcomed the guests to the Stadtlabor. He also welcomed Sabine Philipp, Director of sam - Stadtmuseum am Markt, and Verena Thiels-McMurray from SEG Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft Wiesbaden. Brensing emphasized the importance of Construction with and in existing buildings for the quality of life in cities - especially against the background of increasing vacancies in city centres. He emphasized that the topic of Construction with existing buildings is firmly anchored in the HSRM curriculum and gave the graduates a personal wish: "Stay true to yourself!"

In his welcoming address, the Associate Dean of the faculty, Professor Matthias Kowald, emphasized the role of the Stadtlabor as a place of work and exchange for students. Events like this are an important "window for urban society into science". The exhibition promotes the dialog between the city and students and creates visibility for the graduates' achievements - combined with heartfelt thanks for presenting their work to the public.

Master's degree program Architecture: Revitalization of the Franck-Areal in Ludwigsburg

The master's degree theses were supervised by Prof. Daniel Seiberts together with Prof. Isabella Leber, Prof. Volker Kleinekort and Prof. Karin Damrau. The starting point of the task was the rededication of the Franck-Areal in Ludwigsburg, where Caro coffee was produced until 2018. The site has a significant impact on the city's history and is centrally located - a particular challenge for the Master's students. The focus was on the revitalization of two former industrial buildings with different construction methods, which were to be combined functionally and in terms of design.

"Construction with existing buildings is a challenge of our time," says Professor Daniel Seiberts. The questions behind it: How can existing resources be used intelligently? How can interventions be made in a way that conserves resources? The designs presented showed convincing strategies for transforming industrial buildings into sustainable cultural and working spaces. With the skills acquired during their studies, graduates are well prepared for their academic appointments as architects.

Bachelor's degree program Architecture: Transformation of the Wiesbaden sports arena for the future city museum

Prof. Dieter Müller, Prof. Dr. Mark Fahlbusch, Prof. Christina Jagsch and Prof. Annelen Vollenbroich supervised the bachelor's degree theses. Last semester, the students developed concepts for the redesign of the sports arena in Wiesbaden - with the goal of creating space for the city museum there in the future. The designs combined monument preservation and urban planning aspects with functional requirements for contemporary museum use and showed how construction in existing buildings can provide urban planning impetus and strengthen cultural infrastructure.
