Short interview with Prof. Dr. Alexander Ziegler

Prof. Dr. Alexander Ziegler

Prof. Dr. Alexander Ziegler was appointed Professor of Resource-Efficient Planning, Construction and Operation in the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) on September 1, 2025.

Professor Ziegler studied architecture at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and industrial engineering and management at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences. He also completed a supplementary degree in heritage conservation at Dresden University of Technology, where he later earned his doctorate at EIPOS European Institute for Postgraduate Education. Early in his career, he spent seven years as an authorized signatory and team leader in the project management and project development division at Jones Lang LaSalle. In 2006, he launced his own architecture firm. He has also taught real estate management at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim  and at SRH University of Applied Sciences in Heidelberg.

What aspect of your research fascinates you the most?

My research focuses on integrative real estate controlling for small and medium-sized real estate owners and private investors. In my practical work as an architect, I explore cost-effective and resource-conserving construction, as well as reuse and adaptive reuse of buildings. I find it particularly rewarding to develop solutions for these challenges, and, where possible, put them into practice. I find the process of turning ideas into built reality especially fascinating.

What does good teaching mean to you?

I adhere to the principles of constructivist learning theory, a method in which students actively construct their own knowledge rather than passively receiving it. In other words, independent knowledge building. In my view, a teacher is someone who not only shares knowledge and experience but also motivates students, prepares them for their academic responsibilities, and fosters curiosity and enthusiasm.

What did you want to be growing up?

As a child, I played with Lego, built imaginative constructions and dreamed of becoming a technical designer. Later, I considered becoming a professional tennis player and an artist.

How do you find balance outside of work?

To balance my multifaceted work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, staying active through sports, and exploring cities to experience new cultures.
