Paris excursion
Paris excursion: sustainability, cycling infrastructure and urban development
21.09.2023 - The excursion to Paris began at 314 km/h for students on the Mobility Management degree program. On the afternoon of the first day, they visited "La REcyclerie", a converted railroad station building from 1934 that now houses a diverse cultural center. Here, everything revolves around the motto "recycle, reduce, reuse".
The second day was dedicated to exploring Paris' cycling infrastructure. A guided bike tour by the planning office Copenhagenize took the students along the former Seine freeway, which now serves as a cycle path. At the "Maison du Vélo" on Place de la Bastille, they were given an insight into the planning of supra-regional cycle infrastructure and learned more about the VIF(Vélo Île de France) program, which promotes the development of a high-quality regional cycle path network.
On the third day, the excursion led out of the city to the Val d'Europe district near Disneyland. This neighborhood was developed in 1987 as part of a public-private partnership and was designed to appeal to both park visitors and residents. Dylan Moinse from the Laboratoire Ville Mobilité Transport spoke about Transit Oriented Development and the shift from cars to public transportation.
The students then returned to Châtelet Les Halles station, the busiest hub in Paris, to learn more about the differences between German and French public transport planning principles. An exciting journey ended with a walk along the tracks of the former Paris ring line. To relieve congestion in the central city nodes, a streetcar connection now runs on its own route on grass tracks.
On the last day, the students visited the Écoquartier Clichy-Batignolles, where Christine Völpel, urban planner and member of staff, told them about the history of the district. They also visited UNESCO and enjoyed a boat trip on the Seine to experience Paris from a different perspective.
