PROMOS scholarship for studies and internships worldwide
PROMOS (Program to Increase the Mobility of Students at German Universities) is a scholarship program financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The funds are made available to universities to promote the mobility of students in order to enable them to spend semesters at destinations that are not eligible for funding under any other structured funding program (e.g. ERASMUS+) or other DAAD programs (e.g. HAW.International).
Studies
Study semesters and research stays, for example for final theses, at a recognized university are funded for up to four months. The amount of the scholarship depends on the destination country and is based on the amount of the usual partial scholarship awarded by the DAAD. The monthly funding ranges from €350 - €550.
You can only apply for semester scholarships in the ERASMUS region if there is no ERASMUS cooperation or no ERASMUS funding is possible.
Internship
Internships can be funded with monthly lump sums of up to four months or a travel allowance. Exceptions are internships completed in the ERASMUS area (EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey) and in organizations from the DAAD internship programme. Paid internships with a remuneration of € 500 to € 1,000 are funded with a country-dependent travel allowance. Internships with remuneration of €1,000 or more are not funded.
The monthly funding for internships is between €350 and €550.
All bachelor's and master's degree students are eligible for funding,
- who have German citizenship
- who are on an equal footing with Germans in accordance with Section 8 (1) (2ff), (2), (2a) and (3) BAfög. You can find the wording here.
- as well as non-German students at Hochschule RheinMain if they are enrolled in a degree program with the goal of obtaining a degree at Hochschule RheinMain
- have successfully completed at least one year of study in the Bachelor's degree program. Master's students can apply for the program at the beginning of their studies.
For the persons described in 2. and 3. above, stays in their home country are not eligible for funding. The home country is the country in which the student has been living for the majority of the time for at least five years.
Countries/regions for which the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel warning are not eligible for funding.
Multiple funding
Students can be funded once in each study cycle (bachelor's degree, master's degree).
The application must be submitted via Mobility Online. If you have successfully applied for a place at one of our partner universities, you will receive the link to the PROMOS application via an information email from Mobility Online after the places have been allocated.
As a freemover, with a spot in the Hessian Academic State Programs or for an internship abroad outside of Erasmus, you must first register in the corresponding pipeline. You will receive an information email from the Mobility online portal with a link to the PROMOS application.
Scholarship holders of the Hessian state programs
By registering on Mobility Online, you will receive an overview of the application documents:
A complete application includes:
- Resume
- Letter of motivation (notes on the letter of motivation)
- Letter of recommendation from a professor of a subject-related course (not a foreign language course!) in your faculty
- current transcript of completed modules and graded course components (download via COMPASS)
- Language certificate
- Confirmation from the host university / internship company (can be submitted later if not available by the application deadline)
- For studies: Learning Agreement (either using the form from your faculty or the form from the portal)
- For internships: Confirmation of recognition from the faculty (form available on the portal)
Scholarship holders are selected based on the quality of their letter of motivation, previous academic achievements, the required language skills, their letter of recommendation and their social and political engagement (at university or in their private life). Points are awarded to your application documents based on a points system in accordance with the above selection criteria. The total points awarded result in a ranking list of applicants. The available funds will be distributed according to the list. Applicants who are not eligible for funding due to the limited resources are listed as “alternates” on the ranking list. In the past, individual applications have been able to move up the list and receive a scholarship each semester due to changes (withdrawals for various reasons, additional funds subsequently approved).
Unused PROMOS funding cannot be carried over to later periods.
To have academic achievements completed abroad recognized, you must fill out a Learning Agreement before departure. In the Learning Agreement, you enter the courses you expect to take at your host university. The courses and subject descriptions can usually be found on the host university's website. With the subject descriptions, you can clarify with the faculty whether the academic achievements to be completed abroad will be recognized at Hochschule RheinMain. With the Learning Agreement, you agree on your learning goals and the recognition of the credits earned abroad. The Learning Agreement must be signed by the faculty/degree program.
- DAAD individual scholarships and PROMOS scholarships may not be claimed at the same time.
- The Deutschlandstipendium and PROMOS funding may be claimed simultaneously without restriction.
- PROMOS funding is not possible if the same funding purpose is being pursued with public funds from Germany. PROMOS funding must be disclosed to other scholarship providers.
- Simultaneous funding from the Richard Müller Foundation and PROMOS is not possible.
- Students who receive a PROMOS scholarship must inform the responsible BAföG abroad office. If you receive BAfög abroad, up to €300 of a monthly partial scholarship installment is exempt from deduction. If a travel allowance is paid via BAfög, travel expenses cannot be covered by PROMOS.
Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage befor your stay abroad. Please find out what health insurance you need for your destination country and seek advice from your health insurance provider.
