Intensive workshop week at St. Hildegard's Monastery in Rüdesheim

On the occasion of project D "Evaluating and Developing in a Historical Context", Prof. Dr. Cristian Abrihan and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Drebes held a workshop at the St. Hildegard Monastery in Rüdesheim am Rhein with students from the Architectural Heritage Conservation (B.Sc.) and Real Estate (M.Sc.) degree programs. The monastery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

The task of the 4th semester students on the Architectural Heritage Conservation bachelor's degree course was to record, analyze and evaluate the monastery's existing buildings. They mapped the monument values and drew up proposals for a compatible subsequent use and structural development. This is to be presented in the form of a feasibility study.

During the workshop, the ideas of the local Benedictine nuns regarding the future use of the historic buildings were discussed, among other things. These discussions were an important part of the project, as they helped the students to develop realistic and sustainable solutions that meet both the requirements of monument conservation and the needs of the monastery community.

The project was accompanied and supported by the Hesse State Office for Monument Preservation.

St. Hildegard's Abbey in Rüdesheim am Rhein is a well-known Benedictine convent where 36 nuns between the ages of 33 and 93 live and work. It was founded in 1165 by Hildegard von Bingen, abolished in 1803 in the course of secularization and rebuilt in 1904 in a neo-Romanesque building above Rüdesheim-Eibingen. St. Hildegard's Abbey is an important historical, cultural, religious, scientific and tourist attraction in the Rhine-Main region. Not only the great Benedictine heritage, but above all the famous founding figure Hildegard von Bingen make the abbey an important attraction for people from Germany and abroad. Since 2002, the abbey has been the gateway to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site and has thus gained even more public attention.
