In the summer semester of 2024, students on the "Architecture | Building Revitalization and Transformation" master's degree program developed designs for the sustainable transformation of the "TeckCenter" in Kirchheim unter Teck, a large building resource from the 1970s, and presented them to the owners, the city administration and the Chamber of Architects. The project was supervised by two professors from Hochschule RheinMain.
The designs showed sustainable development prospects for the building, taking into account the building's grey energy and resources as well as the special urban location at the entrance to the old town and the historical context of the town hall on the site of the former railroad station, as well as the framework conditions for shopping centers and parking garages, which are currently undergoing a major process of change.
The Chamber of Architects of Baden-Württemberg awarded prizes to four of the projects. In a very well-attended public event, the students personally explained their work to interested citizens.
Particularly pleasing was the great interest shown by the people of Kirchheim in the students' work, which led to many stimulating discussions during the public exhibition. In the individual 1:1 discussions with people interested in architecture, the students were able to gain completely different experiences in the argumentation of their designs than in the official presentations of their projects to the experts from the Chamber of Architects and the city planning office.
It was a well-rounded and successful event with surprisingly innovative results and convincingly completed projects. Sustainability was provided proof by the students not just as an empty phrase, but in measurable terms, including a life cycle assessment of their designs.
