First days in Wiesbaden and Rüsselsheim

Wiesbaden
Wiesbaden is the capital of the state of Hesse and is located in the metropolitan region Rhein-Main. The closest airport is Frankfurt Airport. The train ride to Wiesbaden takes approximately 30 minutes. The connection to Wiesbaden Main Station is very good.

You can take the bus to get to the three campuses in Wiesbaden.

Rüsselsheim
Rüsselsheim is part of the Rhein-Main region and is located between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.The closest airport is Frankfurt Airport. The train ride to Rüsselsheim takes approximately 15 minutes. The connection to Rüsselsheim main station is very good.

Campus in Rüsselsheim
It is a 20 minute walk from the train station to campus. Alternatively, you can take a bus.
Getting Around
Wiesbaden and Rüsselsheim have a great public bus system. It will take you to all parts of the city and other towns nearby. To get to cities like Frankfurt, Darmstadt or Mainz, you can easily take the train. Information about bus schedules are provided by the regional transport association RMV, Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund, information about trains are provided by the German railway company Deutsche Bahn .
Another option to stay mobile in the city is renting a bike. You can rent bikes for a couple of hours or for longer periods of time. Ask SISS for help.
Registering as resident
If you are staying in Germany for longer than 3 months, you must register as resident at the citizens’ office in the city you live within 14 days of your arrival. You can call the corresponding citizens’ office to arrange an appointment or try it online. SISS can help you with arranging an appointment and registration.
You will need the following documents for registration:
- identification card or passport
- a lessor confirmation Wohnungsbestätigung fro Wiesbaden (PDF), or a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for Rüsselsheim (PDF)
If your family is coming along to Germany, you will need additional documents – as originals and as certified German translations:
- marriage certificate
- birth certificates of parents and children
After registration, you will receive a registration certificate, your social security number and your tax ID. Please keep these documents in a safe place. You can use the registration certificate to open a bank account in Germany.
If you are staying in Germany for longer than 3 months and have registered as resident at the citizens' office you will receive a letter from the respective foreigners' registration office. This letter will include an appointmet at the foreigners's office to apply for a residence permit. It will also list the documents you will need to bring to this appointment.
In some cases (e.g. research stays) it is not necessary to apply for a residence permit because the requested visa already covers the entire stay. If this is the case, the foreigners' registration office will inform you.
