Medical care

It is strongly recommended that you find a family doctor for your stay in Germany that you can contact if you have any health problems. In the event of illness, your family doctor may refer you to a specialist, such as a dermatologist.

If you need medical care outside the office hours of your family doctor's practice but do not have a life-threatening emergency, you can find out online which doctor is on call or you can call 116 117. This service is usually available on the weekends and on public holidays.

Hospital emergency rooms are responsible for very urgent but non-life-threatening emergencies.

Pharmacies and medicines

You can buy over-the-counter and prescription medication in a pharmacy. Prescription drugs must be prescribed by a doctor beforehand. Please note that not all medication costs are covered in full or in part by your health insurance.

As a side note: The color of the prescription indicates the type of payment due. Red means €5 co-payment and the rest is covered; green means, you must pay the full price.
