Application and enrollment
First degree
Application for a first regular semester of study
If you are a first-year student, i.e. you are not or have never been enrolled in a higher education institution in Germany, you apply for a first semester of study.
If you want to change degree program or study location or resume your studies after an interruption, you can apply for both a first and a higher regular semester of study.
Application for a higher regular semester of study
Students who wish to change their subject or study location or who wish to resume their studies after an interruption can apply for both a higher and a first regular semester of study. This means that two applications can be submitted.
Placement in a higher regular semester of study when changing subject or place of study is only possible if examination results from previous studies are brought along that can also be recognized in the new degree program.
Second degree course
You are considered a second degree applicant if you have already completed your studies at a state or state-certified higher education institution in Germany. Previous periods of study at vocational academies can be recognized if the vocational academy and the degree obtained or sought there is equivalent to that of a state higher education institution.
The first degree is only considered completed if it was completed with a bachelor's degree, Diplom, state examination, master's thesis, doctorate or graduation.
The selection of applicants for a second degree for a degree program with restricted admission in the first semester of study is determined by a measurement number, which is formed from the result of the final examination of the first degree and the importance of the reasons for the second degree. You can find further information on the calculation of the measurement number in Annex 1 of the Hessian University Admission Ordinance.
