The HSRM calendar is a project of the Communication Design degree program and offers young designers a platform to present their creativity, talent and perspective. Under the direction of Prof. Jacqueline Hen, the students decided to work with the motto "Design for Democracy" for the 2026 edition, which is also the central theme of the "World Design Capital Frankfurt 2026".

Imaginative to provocative calendar motifs

The students investigated how design can support dialog, representation and participation in society. From this perspective, they reflected on the power of visual communication to promote awareness and inclusion and to share knowledge.

Each month's design interprets values such as equality, transparency, diversity, pluralism and freedom of expression. It collects different questions and perspectives on democracy and presents them in an imaginative, playful and sometimes provocative way. The calendar design is inspired by one of the most important tools for participating in democracy: the ballot paper.

Limited to 700 copies

The calendar contains 14 motifs: twelve for each month in 2026, an additional motif for December 2025 and one for January 2027. 2026 is framed by portraits of the two women Marie Nejar and Margot Friedländer, who were important witnesses to the Nazi regime in the 1930s and 1940s and dedicated their lives to the fight for democracy.

The university calendar was printed and finished by students in the risograph workshop at Hochschule RheinMain. It is limited to 700 copies.

Release and exhibition

The university calendar 2026 "Design for Democracy" will be presented to the public at Haus der Heimat in Wiesbaden on Wednesday, November 26, at 7 pm. The release is part of the opening of the project exhibition "[re]connect - Origin in Motion" by the Association of Expellees.
