Study abroad as a freemover

Self-organized Semester Abroad

If none of our partner universities are interesting enough for you, you can generally spend a semester abroad as a "freemover" and apply for a university of your choice. We recommend the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for comprehensive information on stays abroad, countries, educational systems, universities worldwide and much more.

There are also institutions that provide students with free information and arrange study places abroad, usually at selected universities in certain regions.

GOstralia or the Institut Ranke Heinemann provide good advice on study semesters in Australia and New Zealand. College Contact has a wide range of offers worldwide. Asia Exchange specializes in Asia.

You can also apply for BAfög for a self-organized semester abroad and apply for funding such as PROMOS. You can find various funding opportunities here.

Please remember that you must start making concrete plans at least one year in advance if you want to study abroad for one or two semesters, limitation periods must be observed and deadlines must also be observed when applying for funding. Inform yourself early on!

Please register on Mobility Online if you have been accepted at a host university.
You can use this registration to apply for PROMOS funding. But even if you do not apply for funding, we like to know where our students spend their semesters abroad. In your faculty, you can clarify whether certain study achievements from abroad will be recognized by providing a description of the subject. To do this, you agree on a Learning Agreement before your departure, in which you list the subjects you expect to take and would like to have recognized. The Learning Agreement can be changed later once your courses abroad have been finalized.
