Description of each individual semester

 

The Bachelor's degree program "Media: Conception & Production" consists of a total of 18 modules. These modules build on each other. Detailed regulations are set out in the examination regulations.

 

In the 1st semester, practical basics are taught in two modules.

Module 01: Media Design

  • Teaching in-depth knowledge of photography, handling video cameras and the use of light and other film equipment
  • Introduction to the basics of design and corporate design
  • Learning the basic principles of video editing, colour correction and animation techniques
  • Insight into the basics of various programs from the Adobe Collection

Module 02: Media Technology & Production

  • Explanation of the basics of media technology
  • Explanation of the interplay between media design and media technology
     


The 2nd semester serves to impart broad theoretical, specialist knowledge in creative, technological, journalistic, legal, organisational and linguistic subjects.

Module 03: Conceptual Film Design

  • Learning methods of artistic visualisation and storytelling
  • Image design in film
  • Use of storyboards

Module 04: Design & Technology

  • Possible applications of animation
  • Basics of studio technology and computer-based media processing
  • Video production in connection with the theory of media technology

Module 05: Production Management 1 

  • Systematics of strategy-based media conception and production
  • Target group definitions and analyses
  • Creation of cross-media communication concepts
  • Work processes in the creative industries and organisational production workflows and processes in media production, costing, project management

Module 06: Media Theory & Journalism

  • Role of the media in society
  • Media change and digital media environment
  • Individual and mass communication
  • Journalistic genres and their application
  • Editorial organisation and processes

 

In the 3rd semester, you will do a 24-week internship in media production. Do not worry, you have a good chance of finding an internship, as the skills you have acquired in the first two semesters are in high demand. There is even the possibility that certain internships that you have already completed after your Abitur (high school graduation/A-Levels) will be recognised by the examination board. In the 4th semester theoretical knowledge will be combined with the practical application in media productions. We focus on the conception and creation of new media formats and productions. At the end of each semester, we proudly present your work at the "Media: Showroom Night". You can see lots of great examples of our student's work on our YouTube channel.

Module 08: Project Studies 1

  • Development of experimental media formats in the fields of cinematography, animation and studio production
  • Creation of scripts, storyboards and production plans
  • Carrying out filming and studio productions
  • Creating animations in 2D and 3D

Module 09: Content Development

  • Introduction to the world of creative writing
  • Dramaturgy in fiction and reality
  • The art of scriptwriting
  • Material and character development in moving image media
  • Fundamentals of the ethics of the directing profession

Module 10: Production Management 2

  • Media markets and players in the film industry
  • Business models and value chains
  • Film financing and film funding
  • Green Film Shooting
  • Basics of media law
  • Legal framework conditions in moving image production

 

The 5th semester focuses on practical experience as well. In the modules, you will work both alone and in teams on cool projects such as the production of short films. Here you can fully develop your creativity and create exciting fictional works. 

Module 11: Project Studies 2

  • Conception and production of fictional content, taking into account cross-media formats
  • Researching, analysing, structuring, editing and distributing complex content on various media platforms
  • Casting and production organisation of a fictional production

Module 12: Production Management 3

  • Tried-and-tested project management structures and processes
  • Agile project management and design thinking
  • Project planning and controlling
  • Risk management and conflict management
  • Basics of setting up a business and self-employment

Module 13: Media Research

  • Science and its social position and functions
  • Scientific statements, hypotheses and theories
  • Working on and with scientific sources
  • Defining and realising application-related questions

 

In the 6th semester, you will study at one of our partner universities (or at a foreign university of your choice) or do a 16-week internship abroad. At the same time, you will work on your own academic thesis. If you would like more information on this, see "Your semester abroad". There are exciting opportunities to discover the world and expand your knowledge!



In the 7th semester, you have the chance to get really creative! You will produce a practical final project (e.g. a short film or a documentary) and write a Bachelor's thesis. You have the option to work together with partners from the industry. You can also produce experimental projects in which you research and explore innovative media productions. Here you can fully develop your creativity and break new ground. It will be exciting, challenging and totally rewarding!
