Teaching

Courses offered include computer graphics, virtual reality systems, mixed reality, computer graphics for education and entertainment, information visualization, computer games, 3D modeling and reconstruction, 3D animation, 2D image analysis, digital image processing, development of interactive user interfaces, and human-computer interaction. In addition, Prof. Dörner offers specialist seminars and supervision of professional internships, bachelor's theses, master's theses, and doctoral theses.

Research and projects

Prof. Dr. Ralf Dörner's research interests lie in the field of visualization (interactive information visualization, visual data analysis), virtual and mixed reality (especially in the area of authoring systems), and the use of computer graphics for e-learning and entertainment.


Prof. Dörner has participated in numerous publicly funded projects. He has also carried out several practical contract research projects. Prof. Dörner also works as a consultant and expert. He has served and continues to serve as spokesperson for the joint doctoral program with Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, and the Hessian Doctoral Center for Applied Computer Science.


Prof. Dr. Dörner is the author or co-author of more than 150 international scientific publications.

Committees and memberships

Prof. Dr. Ralf Dörner has served and continues to serve as a member of program committees for national and international conferences (e.g., IEEE ISMAR, ACM VRST, IEEE VR) and as a reviewer for academic journals (e.g., International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting). Prof. Dörner also works as an expert advisor, e.g., for the European Commission, ASIIN e.V., the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Science Council. He is a member of ACM SIGGRAPH and the GI - Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Informatics Society). He is an elected member of the steering committee of the GI VR/AR specialist group, a member of the IEEE Consumer Technology Society (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Metaverse) and an advisor to the Promotionskolleg NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia Doctoral College).
