18:00 - 19:30
Hochschule RheinMain, Campus Kurt-Schumacher-Ring, Gebäude G, Raum 102, Kurt-Schumacher-Ring 18, 65197 Wiesbaden

The lecture series “Democracy Research in Dialogue” is visiting the HSRM.

Democracy thrives when people have a say and participate in decision-making. But not all voices are heard equally well.

The “Democracy Research in Dialogue” lecture series, organized by the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts, is making a stop at Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSRM). Minister of Higher Education Timon Gremmels and HSRM President Prof. Dr. Eva Waller will engage in a discussion with researchers and students.

The following guests will serve as panelists:

  • Dr. Volkan Çıdam, holder of the Paulskirche professorship in democracy research for the state of Hesse, will speak about obstacles to democratic organization, using the example of the resistance by faculty and students at Boğaziçi university against autocratic interventions.
  • Prof. Dr. Tanja Grendel, Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at HSRM, asks who is actually involved at the local level—and who remains excluded due to barriers to access or unsuitable formats.
  • Margarete Richter, from the HSRM’s EcoAct project group, demonstrates how social media, artificial intelligence, and new forms of interaction can engage young people in democratic processes.
  • Maria Sala Archelos, a student in the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and a member of the Citizens’ Council, represents the students’ perspective and explains what participatory decision-making feels like in everyday (university) life.

Together, the participants will discuss how democratic processes can be made more resilient, accessible, and sustainable.

Stefan Schröder will moderate the discussion.
