Sylvia Weimer
How did you get into your current job?
At the former Hochschule RheinMain, which was called Fachhochschule at that time, I took magazine workshops which were my favorite courses. When the exchange program in Sydney came to an end, instead of traveling, I decided to work and gain experience and got a job as art director of a 260p coffee table book/magazine. I quickly became well known with other coffee table magazines in photography, lifestyle, luxury, jewelry, music/pop, architecture and interiors, and started my own studio Spacelab Design, and to date I have designed over 50 different titles for a range of publishers, some in Singapore, many in Australia, and one in the old home country.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your studies at Hochschule RheinMain (formerly Fachhochschule Wiesbaden)?
I still remember the student time stress of having to design a logo or project within a week on an impromptu course (when other semester projects often had months), a week seemed incredibly fast back then, but nowadays it often has to be done in three days or less.
Which professors have influenced you and why?
Professor Gregor Krisztian in particular. The workshops were always exciting, as were the design trips to the Netherlands. The magazine design workshop led to my Diploma thesis Coffee Table Photography Magazine and my 20-year career as an editorial art director.
Looking back on your semesters studied: What advice would you like to give to today's students?
Try out more, even courses that aren't obvious at first. Experiment more during your studies, it's a very free design time that you have to make the most of.
