FAQs
We recommend that you actively search for accommodation in good time, for example by applying for a room in a hall of residence or private accommodation on the open housing market. The higher education institution does not own or administer halls of residence and cannot provide accommodation. It is important to start looking for accommodation early and to be patient.
What types of accommodation are there?
Student halls of residence offer small, separate accommodation units for students and their limited places are very popular. The student halls of residence are not owned by HSRM, but by the Studierendenwerk Frankfurt or private providers.
Living in a shared flat (WG) means that you share an apartment with roommates. In addition to the lower price, this also has the advantage that you can make contacts with other people and use your German language skills.
Another cheaper option would be to look for a room to sublet . With this form of accommodation, you live in a house or apartment within a family or with senior citizens who have outgrown their own living space. You have your own room and often share a kitchen and bathroom with the landlord.
Students are also often looking for new tenants for interim lets, for example while they are completing an internship abroad or a semester abroad. Accommodation offers for interim lets are often limited to a short period of time and are only a temporary solution.
Further information can also be found in the dictionary of halls of residence of the German Association for Student Affairs.
How do I apply for a place in one of the student residences?
There are the student halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk Frankfurt with one hall of residence in Wiesbaden and two halls of residence in Rüsselsheim as well as some private providers. In all cases, you must apply for accommodation with the respective provider yourself and in good time. You should also admit yourself to a waiting list if you do not get a place straight away!
Here you will find an overview of the halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk Frankfurt as well as further information on the online application.
There are also a number of private providers of halls of residence in Wiesbaden and Rüsselsheim.
Where can I find accommodation on the private housing market?
You can find the advertisements on the Internet, in newspapers, in Stud.IP or on the notice board (notice boards can be found on many walls in the main buildings of the campuses, the characteristic is that there are many advertisements there) at the higher education institution. You may also already know some (future) fellow students who can find you a room in a shared flat.
