Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) and RheinMain University of Applied Sciences (HSRM) teamed up to hold their second summer/winter school. The event taking place from April 9 to 18, 2024 is titled “Green Hydrogen (PtX, Derivatives) Generation, Transport and Use (Fuel Cell)”. The online format allows students around the world to gain an overview of the current status of hydrogen technology and the hydrogen strategy in the EU and Namibia.

The event is attended by over 100 participants from countries such as Germany, Namibia, Kenya and Jordan. In her welcoming address on Tuesday evening, HSRM President Prof. Dr. Eva Waller emphasized the beneficial nature of the format: “A cross-university exchange on topics of today and the future is indispensable in view of the global challenges we are currently facing. Only those who know different approaches can choose the best approach. I wish you inspiring presentations and discussions!”

Is green hydrogen the solution?

The EU wants to be climate-neutral by 2050. Green hydrogen – that is, hydrogen produced from renewable energies – is intended to be a cornerstone of a climate-neutral energy system, as it can help reduce CO₂ emissions and the dependence on fossil fuels. The two-week course will focus on topics around green hydrogen such as potential local, national and global applications, production options and quality, potential technical problems, transportation and storage.

“I heard that more than 400 people applied for the Summer/Winter School. The great interest in this event shows how important this topic is” said Dr. Erold Naomab, President of the NUST, who expressed his thanks to the team around Prof. Dr. Birgit Scheppat from the Faculty of Engineering, to visiting professor Dr. Samuel John from Namibia and to interim professor Dr. Lucy Ombaka from Kenya for their exceptional commitment.
