International Handbook on How AI Is Changing the Media Published

Stephan Böhm presents his newly published academic book on AI and media transformation.

A new reference book has been published, titled “Handbook of AI-based Media Disruption: Emerging Technologies and Multidisciplinary Perspectives Across Sectors,” which examines the profound changes in the media sector brought about by generative artificial intelligence.

The volume was edited, amongst others, by Stephan Böhm,, who works as a lecturer and Dean of Studies at the DCSM faculty of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He collaborated on this publication with his colleagues Stephen Collins and Sarah Keith (Macquarie University, Sydney), Alexander Godulla (University of Leipzig) and Richard Savery (University of Canberra).

A particular focus of the anthology is on bringing together interdisciplinary and international perspectives on the impact of AI on the media industry in a handbook. The idea for the book originated during Stephan Böhm’s visiting professorship at Macquarie University in Sydney in 2023, which took place as part of his research semester. It was there that collaboration with international colleagues developed, particularly with the School of Communication, Society and Culture and the School of Computing at Macquarie University.

Stephan Böhm emphasises the productive and trusting collaboration with his co-editors and the contributing authors from various countries and disciplines. The anthology brings together a diverse range of international contributions which, amongst other things, describe the impact of generative AI on content creation, journalism, music, film and gaming. Furthermore, it addresses key issues relating to trust, ethics, regulation, the world of work and new skills requirements.

With its wide range of topics, the book offers a comprehensive overview of the current AI-driven transformation of the media industry, whilst also providing valuable insights for research and practice. Since its publication in April 2026 by Springer, the handbook and its articles have been accessed over 6,000 times. A German edition is currently in preparation.
