About the namesakes

Johann Wilhelm Eugen Schmalenbach (1873 - 1955) is considered the founder of business administration as an academic teaching subject. He saw this as an art theory geared towards practical business experience. As a student in 1899, he was already working on contribution margin accounting, which was completely new at the time. This and his other scientific work attracted so much attention that he was appointed professor in Cologne at the age of 33, without having previously obtained his Abitur (German secondary school leaving certificate) or doctorate. As a proponent of dynamic accounting theory, practical relevance was always particularly important to him.

Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Dieter Fladung had been a lecturer in the faculty of economics since 1974, teaching accounting, examination and fiduciary accounting. From 1987 until his unexpected passing on January 1, 2003, he served his faculty as Dean with a great sense of responsibility and never diminishing creative energy. The faculty and the higher education institution owe him many impulses and initiatives for the development of international Liaison to Partners and the establishment of new degree programs.
