How are places at university allocated for the first regular semester of study?
In each degree program with restricted admission, the places at university are divided into the following quotas:
- Quota for foreign applicants (up to 10% of places)
- Quota for cases of hardship (up to 5% of places)
- Quota for second degree applicants (up to 3% of places)
- Quota for persons requiring special consideration/sponsorship (elite athletes) (up to 1% of places)
- Main quotas (after deduction of quotas 1-4, the remaining places at university are divided 20% according to waiting period and 80% according to qualification)
The level of qualification is determined by the average grade of the higher education entrance qualification (HZB) and a further criterion, the so-called second criterion. At Hochschule RheinMain, a statute stipulates that completed vocational training should be taken into account as a second criterion. This means that proof of completed vocational training can improve the average grade of the HZB, i.e. the applicants may participate in the award procedure with a better average grade than stated on their higher education entrance qualification (HZB).
Information on how and which vocational training is taken as a basis for which degree programs can be found on the degree program pages of Hochschule RheinMain.
You can download the statutes of Hochschule RheinMain for the selection procedure here:

Important: Only vocational training that is not part of the university entrance qualification will be taken into account. If vocational training is a requirement for obtaining a university entrance qualification, e.g. vocational training plus one year of technical secondary school, this cannot be recognized again as a second criterion.
Those who have not completed any vocational training take part in the procedure with the average grade of the university entrance qualification.
Ranking lists for grade and waiting period
All applicants in the main quotas are listed in both the waiting period ranking list and the qualification ranking list (grade of higher education entrance qualification) and are ranked according to their grades or waiting period(s).
For the grade ranking list, applicants with the same average grade are ranked according to the following criteria: waiting period, service performed and lot.
For the waiting period ranking list, applicants with the same waiting period are ranked according to the following criteria: grade of higher education entrance qualification, service performed and lot.
Admission in earlier award procedures
Irrespective of the quotas described above, you will be admitted to a degree program if you had applied for this degree program in an earlier allocation procedure and were allocated a place at university that you could not accept because you had completed
- voluntary military service, civilian service, service in the Federal Border Guard (up to a period of three years) or federal voluntary service,
- at least two years of service as a development worker,
- have completed youth voluntary service or
- have looked after or cared for a child under the age of 18 or another relative in need of care for up to 3 years.
In these cases, however, you are only entitled to a place at university if
- you have the university entrance qualification and any internship required for the studies at the beginning of the service and
- you were admitted to the chosen degree program by Hochschule RheinMain at the beginning or during your service (a copy of the admission letter must be enclosed with the application) and
- no more than one admission procedure has been carried out since the end of your service.
If the service has not yet ended, you must provide proof that it will have ended by April 30 for an application for the summer semester or by October 31 for an application for the winter semester.
What is a succession procedure?
As a rule, not all applicants accept their places at university. The places at university that remain vacant as a result are awarded in the succession procedure to those who could not be admitted in the main allocation procedure. It is not possible to predict how many places will become available for the succession procedure.
If you have received a rejection notification, the succession procedure will automatically examine whether you can be admitted to one of the places at university that have become available. Only applications admitted in the succession procedure will receive a new notification. Admission in the succession procedure can sometimes be granted very late.
