Girls' Day at the Rüsselsheim Campus began with a welcome from Prof. Dr. Tamara van Roo, the faculty 's Gender Equality Commissioner. With the words "Who knows what STEM means?", she encouraged the 40 schoolgirls to join in and introduced them to the various STEM subjects.
The students were then able to get active in various workshops. In the process engineering laboratory, they determined the sludge index and discovered microorganisms under the microscope. In the measurement and control technology laboratory, they learned how solar energy is used to power vehicles and built a solar car. They also had the opportunity to construct a snack machine and solder their own mini LED shaking cubes.
"Do your thing!"
Girls' Day also took place at the Kurt-Schumacher-Ring Campus in Wiesbaden at the same time. Dean Prof. Dr. Robert Kanz encouraged the 44 female participants to make their way into the world of engineering: "Don't let anyone tell you that girls can't do something!" Vice-President for Finance and Administration Dr. Tina Klug also welcomed the girls and urged them to "Do your thing!"
In various workshops, the participants were able to experience the multifaceted world of civil engineering up close. They tested wood with smart cameras, examined the water quality in the Wellritz Valley and discussed sustainable mobility. They experienced mobility restrictions on a bicycle course and were able to measure the flow speed of the water in the Wellritztal stream using measuring devices.
