Social work

Social workers advise and support people facing challenging life situations. They also work towards dismantling structural inequalities and allowing people to participate in society. During your degree, you will deal with knowledge and methods from different disciplines such as sociology, education, law, health studies, social research, and psychology – as well as with consulting, and case and project work. You will learn to analyze life situations and societal contexts, to design individual, group- and social space-related support offers, and to reflect critically on your professional actions.

The degree enables you to work as a state-recognized social worker in Germany, or to work internationally. You could work for charities, aid organizations (such as NGOs, associations, foundations) or in the administration of social policy. The fields you could work in range from child and youth welfare and school social work to working in prisons, with refugees and migrants, or with people affected by poverty and addiction, to working in women’s refuges or work in the community.
