Students on the Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering degree program at Hochschule RheinMain carried out a practice-oriented project day at the MFSV Trebur e. V. model airfield as part of the "UAV and Multicopter" lecture. The goal was to apply and deepen theoretical knowledge about the control, navigation and safety aspects of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under real conditions. Basic flight maneuvers for the safe handling of drones in airspace were taught - also with regard to the EU drone driver's license.
Maiden flight of the prototype
In addition to practice flights with commercial multicopters, the focus was on the maiden flight of a VTOL prototype specially developed as part of the course. The vertical take-off and landing aircraft was designed, manufactured and programmed by the students - from 3D printing the structural parts to integrating the flight controls.
The excursion was organized and accompanied by Prof. Dr. Matthias Schäfer and UAV expert and adjunct instructor Ruben Ebersold. The project day marks an important component of the practical engineering education at Hochschule RheinMain: it combines technical expertise with concrete application and promotes both technical understanding and the students' teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The university would like to thank MFSV Trebur for their kind support and for making the airfield available.
