Program structure for first semester students
Social Work studies are divided into modules consisting of several courses. The goal is to provide you with sound theoretical basics and practice-oriented skills. The study plan gives you an overview of the recommended sequence of modules. This will show you which courses start in the first semester and which content will be covered in more depth later on.
Terms
You will come across important technical terms during your studies:
- Module: Thematically related courses.
- CP (credit points): Points that measure your workload.
- Compulsory modules: Fixed modules that you must take.
- Required electives: Modules that you can choose from depending on your interests.
- Module handbook: Official document with details of all modules, examinations and CP.
Basics
User ID
HDS
The HDS ID gives you access to the Compass system. Your course schedule is stored in COmpass. You will receive a letter or email with your access data before you start your studies. Please keep this document in a safe place! You can use the master password contained in it to reset your forgotten password at any time.
Attend courses
You will receive a fixed course schedule in the 1st semester. This means that you are automatically registered for the compulsory courses. You can find the course schedule on the Compass portal. From the 2nd semester onwards, you put together your own course schedule. The student mentors will help you with questions about your course schedule.
The module handbook and the study plan are important guidelines for planning your studies. You can find them in the internal website area on the page of your degree program under Study organization.
- The study plan shows you all the courses and modules you have to take during your studies and the best order in which to complete them.
- The module handbook describes the content, types of examination and credit points of all modules.

Examination regulations
The examination regulations (PO) set out the framework conditions for your studies. They regulate which modules you have to complete, how examinations are conducted and which deadlines apply. Recognition of grading prerequisites
Do you already have credits from another degree program or training? Under certain requirements, you can have these recognized. You will need to provide proof and submit an application to the Examinations Office. You can find more information here:
