Dipl.-Ing. Dieter Carbon, Head of the Internet Security Working Group of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) Rheingau-Bezirksverein e. V., showed students of the Faculty of Engineering how to program a Raspberry Pi Pico on three Tuesday afternoons in the summer semester 2025.
Three-part workshop
The workshop is divided into three consecutive parts: On the first appointment, students will receive an introduction to Thonny, an open source software application for Python, and to programming with MicroPython on the Raspberry Pi Pico for beginners with no prior knowledge of programming.
In the second part, students learn how to program the display control and sensors. For example, they program the control of a two-line display, a digital thermometer, motion detectors, sensors for measuring distance, light and volume and learn how to calibrate sensors.
The last part of the workshop deals with getting started in the smart home world using the MQTT protocol.
Target group and further information
The workshop is aimed at all students of the Faculty of Engineering and takes place over three appointments, each lasting 3.5 hours. Registration is expected to be possible again in the winter semester 2025/26. Information and registration can be done via Stud.IP.
