Language certificates for students: Stays abroad
The Language Hub supports you with language certificates for studying abroad or internships. It is important that you know what you are applying for, as the proof you need depends on your plans. We offer language level examinations for all languages currently on offer. For other languages, we will put you in touch with higher education language lecturers where possible.
Your options
Partner universities
In order to spend an Erasmus semester at a partner university of Hochschule RheinMain, you usually have to provide proof of a specified level in the language of instruction or working language to ensure that you can follow classes or complete assignments. For information on providing proof of your language level and Erasmus funding
Further details can be found on the pages of the International Office.
Direct application to the DAAD or other scholarship providers
If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship directly, you will need a DAAD language certificate for the language of the country or language of instruction if you do not have one of the recognized certificates. Inquire with other scholarship providers about their required language certificates and the language level required.
For proof of English proficiency, make an appointment for the OPT at the Language Center in good time (the test may be taken once per semester) and contact the OPT coordinator Kathrin Bennett before this appointment to register for the DAAD test.
Freemover
If you are organizing your semester abroad yourself, contact your host university to find out which language certificate is required. In the case of TOEFL, IELTS or other standardized examinations, you will need to find a test center and make an appointment, as the HSRM Language Center is not a test center. If the university requires a DAAD form, a letter or its own form, make an appointment with an HSRM language lecturer or the Language Center in good time. (The Language Center may be able to use the result of an existing certificate or language course on your transcript of completed modules and graded course components to complete a required form).
In the case of English, take the Oxford Placement Test (OPT) at the Language Center (the test may be taken once per semester). Contact the OPT coordinator, Kathrin Bennett, before the test date to register for the additional DAAD test items. Your form/letter will be filled out/created based on this.
Promos
For an application for PROMOS funding, submit to PROMOS the language certificate that you used for the place application. There is no minimum level specified for this. For PROMOS applications, you can use your transcript of completed modules and graded course components or a recognized certificate. If you need to provide proof of your English level and have not yet taken an English language course at HSRM or an Oxford Placement Test (OPT - English), register for an OPT appointment in good time (the test may be taken once a semester). If this does not work, please contact the Language Hub. Language certificates for Spanish (without attended HSRM courses or certificates) are issued by Spanish coordinator Eva Narvajas
