Application center for all regenerative forms of energy for the decarbonization of transport, buildings and industry

Project Name:Thermal Energy Storage: Optimus—Development, Optimization, and Application of PCM Emulsions with High Storage Density; Subproject: Testing PCM Emulsion Application in a Small-Scale Heat Pump
faculty: Engineering
Project Leader:Prof. Dr. Stefan Rusche
Project Participants:

Fraunhofer ISE, Freiburg

H&R Wax & Specialities GmbH, Hamburg

IKS Industrielle Kühlsysteme GmbH, Föritztal

Konvekta AG, Schwalmstadt

Duration:2021–2026
Funding Institution or Contracting Authority: Hesse Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWE)

The goal of the research project is to develop thermal storage systems based on PCM slurries (Phase Change Material Slurry, PCS) or phase-change emulsions (PCM emulsions, PCME) for the fields of building climate control and mobility. The goal is to further develop and optimize existing formulations of PCM emulsions in terms of their thermodynamic and rheological properties, stability, and compatibility for the aforementioned application areas. Subsequently, they will be produced on a scale of up to 32 m³ and tested in the respective applications. The goal of the project is therefore the application-specific further development and optimization of PCM emulsions, as well as the investigation of their efficiency in specific applications.
