Forschungszentrum AZARE

Anwendungszentrum für alle regenerativen Energieformen zur Dekarbonisierung von Verkehr, Gebäuden und Industrie

Prof. Dr. Birgit Scheppat

As a physicist, I have been working for more than 20 years on the generation and use of renewable electricity for storage in batteries and in the form of chemical fuels (hydrogen). I am interested in the transition from the laboratory to practical applications. I am happy to help overcome technical or regulatory difficulties. Based on research questions, I try to formulate clear objectives that help to provide energy in the form of electricity, heat and especially hydrogen efficiently and in the most resource-efficient way possible. In many years of working with industry, I have learned how to find solutions and incorporate them into teaching or share them in the form of continuing education.

The main focus of my work is the design of fuel cell systems (CleanEngine project), the storage of hydrogen in pressurized (up to 700 bar) and solid-state storage systems (metal hydrides: Hynes Cube) and hydrogen sensors (HYLevel). Or the design and planning of systemic paths for the generation and use of electricity from renewable energy, e.g. Energiepark Mainz: 6 MW power-to-gas plant and Clever Electric City: use of 1 MWh battery storage in the local grid.
