What is it?

With its interdisciplinary approach, the master's degree program Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas prepares students for tasks in urban, landscape and infrastructure planning as well as in environmental management and deals with the challenges and future tasks of spatial, social, technological and climatic change. The students acquire the necessary knowledge and familiarize themselves with the required methods in order to combine scientific theories and methods with practicable implementation in the sustainable development of cities and metropolitan areas.

Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas is a joint degree program offered by Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and Hochschule Geisenheim University. The degree program thus combines the expertise of all three universities in the fields of urban planning, resources and infrastructure, landscape architecture and urban ecology.

What can I do with it?

Graduates of the master's degree program Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas are highly skilled in the relevant tasks of environmental management, infrastructure planning and urban and landscape planning. Key topics are, for example, neighborhood and urban development, regional planning, nature conservation, open space protection and planning of green areas, water management, resource management, mobility and traffic management. At the same time, graduates of this degree program are generalists with a background in economics and ecology who have the necessary leadership skills to work independently as project leaders in planning and management.

A wide range of professional fields of activity are open to graduates in the municipal, public and private sector, in local, regional, national and international authorities and institutions, planning and engineering offices, development companies, transport associations, water supply and wastewater disposal companies, energy supply and waste management companies, in research institutions and universities.

With evidence of a specialization in landscape architecture or urban planning and a corresponding relevant first university degree (pursuant to the respective German legislation on chambers), an application for registration as a "landscape architect" or "urban planner" can be submitted to the chambers of architects and urban planners, provided that the additionally required periods of professional practice are fulfilled.
