The mechanical engineering department of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences has been offering a part-time program since 1997. The program allows working technicians and master craftspersons to acquire a university of applied sciences qualification of certified engineer (Diplom-Ingenieur). Given the prior knowledge and professional practice of this already highly qualified pool of applicants, the program can be completed by studying part-time for eight-semesters while continuing to work.

Admission requirement for the program is a vocational degree as master craftsperson or technician, a minimum work experience of six months and continuous part-time work during studying of at least 50 %.

A higher education entrance qualification is established by submitting a high-school degree (Abitur), a specialized high-school degree or a degree as master craftsperson. Technicians might need to schedule an advising meeting regarding their higher education entrance qualification. To prepare for studying, the Rüsselsheim adult education center offers preparatory courses in mathematics, and the computer-based preparatory math course of the university of applied sciences combines e-learning units for independent study with several on-campus meetings. On the one hand, the program aims at providing students with the classical technical, mathematical and scientific skills that engineering work requires. RheinMain University of Applied Sciences however also places special emphasis on teaching professional and communication skills. These include subjects such as foreign languages (such as technical English) or presentation techniques.
