Students may be eligible to receive financial aid based on the Federal Law for the Promotion of Training and Education (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz – BAföG). Aim of the law is to enable young people to choose the type of education or training that matches their interests and abilities irrespective of their financial background.
The amount of the financial aid payments depends on the student's own income and as a general rule also on the income of the students' parents. The longest possible period of time during which financial aid is granted is the standard period of study of the degree program in question. Half of the financial aid is granted as interest-free loan and the other half as direct subsidy.

Many students work part-time during their studies. Students can also receive financial support through scholarships. Scholarships are awarded for academic achievement as well as for extracurricular political and social volunteer work.
