Financing Your Studies

BAföG: Federal Law for the Promotion of Training and Education

Students may be eligible to receive financial aid based on the Federal Law for the Promotion of Training and Education (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz – BAföG). Aim of the law is to enable young people to choose the type of education or training that matches their interests and abilities irrespective of their financial background.

The amount of the financial aid payments depends on the student's own income and as a general rule also on the income of the students' parents. The longest possible period of time during which financial aid is granted is the standard period of study of the degree program in question. Half of the financial aid is granted as interest-free loan and the other half as direct subsidy.

Jobbing

Many students work part-time during their studies. The following leaflet (in German only) of the Studentenwerk informs students about the required tax and insurance payments for jobs that pay less than 400 euros per month or are "minijobs", for part-time work above this limit and for full-time jobs during the semester breaks.
