Besides its workshops, the Center for Center for Communication and Professional Skills offers an array of other opportunities to grow as a person. In the Learning Through Commitment projects, you can look beyond the end of your own nose, experience new things, try and improve your skills and abilities – and all that with the side effect of supporting others.
Personnel developers have been noticing for some time that social skills are most intensively and lastingly learned in real-life contexts and situations. Thus, special training programs for executives were developed for this purpose (check out the Seitenwechsel [changing sides] program for example). Such a program is also on offer for students of RheinMain University.
Service Learning means acquiring expertise and social as well as communication skills by tackling real issues and problems, whose solution assists social, cultural or ecological projects – or even makes them possible in the first place. While service learning is commonplace at universities in the United States of America, in Germany examples for this method of imparting expert knowledge as well as key skills through civic involvement are few and far between.
The Buddy Program, initiated by the Office for International Services and the Center for Communication and Professional Skills, aims to promote intercultural communication and further the personal contact between international guest or exchange students and German students. Students of RheinMain University serve as "buddy" of an international exchange student for one semester.
