Building a future with first-rate education and global networking

Professor Randolf Kauer, Dean of Studies Geisenheim Faculty

The past decade has brought greater changes to Geisenheim than any other comparable period of its history.

The Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences’ former Faculty of Viticulture and Beverage Technology was merged with the Horticulture and Landscape Management faculty to form the Geisenheim Faculty. The existing degree programs for Viticulture and Beverage Technology were brought into line with the Bologna Process to fit the bachelor's and master's degree system. The Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences changed its name to Hochschule RheinMain University of Applied Sciences to stress its international orientation at its location in the Rhein-Main region.

On a parallel track, new bachelor's and master's degree programs were developed, such as International Wine Business (B.Sc.), Horticultural Sciences (M.Sc.) and Urban Planning and Environmental Management (M.Eng.), which have been taken up by a promising number of students.

The study program in the area of master's degree for Viticulture/Oenology, which was previously offered through the national master's program for Oenology in cooperation with the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, was expanded and enhanced by the European VINIFERA master's program with partners in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. There is a high level of interest, which is evidenced not only by the number of students registered but also by their countless countries of origin, both in Europe and from beyond.

In the course of further developing the study opportunities, the dean's office and the departmental professors have undertaken further planning which has already reached its final stages and is about to receive accreditation. Master's programs for International Wine Business and Beverage Technology will be offered in the near future.

These opportunities broaden the academic range here at Geisenheim and provide a sound basis for the future.

All these undertakings in Geisenheim are also supported by extensive construction projects in conjunction with the Geisenheim Research Center and the State Government of the Federal State of Hessen which will benefit not only the staff of the Research Center and the Geisenheim Faculty but particularly the student body.

New laboratory spaces in the Central Institute and Laboratory Building (ZIG) for training in the fields of biology, microbiology, wine chemistry, phytomedicine and soil sciences have proved themselves suitable and their ultra-modern standards will help us ensure the best possible study conditions.

In 2012 the Head of Faculty and secretarial offices will relocate to the fully renovated old Microbiology Building which will house not only offices but also work and seminar rooms for students.

This will be followed by an investment of 30-40 million Euros in a new Beverage and Sensory Evaluation Center as well as a new lecture hall complex.

All our lecture halls are currently equipped with modern media technology, and most areas of the campus are covered by Wi-Fi. The main library is home to one of the world's finest collections of wine-related literature and materials and allows access to a broad range of online literature searches.

After tuition fees were abolished, state funds totalling 240,000 Euros per study year are now made available to the Geisenheim Faculty for improving academic and teaching quality. These are enhanced by further measures taken by the central office in Wiesbaden to benefit the students' interdepartmental studies (foreign studies counselling, language study centre, career and job application training).
